Unless we can describe whatever phenomena, in language -then it doesn’t exist we can only know the world we live in by the language we use to describe it.

What does it mean?
It helps to understand how to look at things and be able to describe them, recognise the way it is made, the materials used into making it, the techniques used, details inscribed onto it, the way we feel observing it.
It gives us the ability to understand the art works or things, and use the similar parameters in making our own works, helps in introducing those elements in different ways in our works.
Alegria, F. (2019, April 28). Is Photograph Art? Light Stalking. Retrieved from https://www.lightstalking.com/is-photography-art/
Photography is always been my interest since childhood. This led me to capturing images of random things using a smartphone. Later, this led me to invest in a professional camera and learn the mechanical and technical side of it. Over the years, I tried to capture what I see, it evolved more and more technically robust, but there is always a quest inside me – what’s the purpose I’m doing all this, I’m just capturing what is already there, and why should my photograph tell a story at all? It made no sense to me. I started wondering what’s in photography to be an art form? I’m just taking a picture of what’s already there, there is nothing new in it or nothing excites me about my photographs or others who tries to show the world what is already happening. Then I came across the above article few days ago which speaks about – is photography art? The author points out that “photography isn’t art. It is a discipline that can be mastered by passionate people in order to produce art, but it is not art by itself” (Alegria, 2019). The author gives some insight into making photography an art when creating something from inside, resulting from one’s feelings and emotions which is defined from ancient Greek philosophy as poiesis, and the second one refers to techne- the techniques used to materialize those emotions from deep inside. The statements above made me question If I’m making photographs that reflects my feelings and emotions. The answer is obvious no. I realized I’m just making pictures (though technically sound) but not creating art out of it, in other terms they are straight, my images doesn’t provoke me in any way that stands out. The author further speaks about the photography evolution from being a fundamental portrait and landscape photography to street photography after the portable cameras entered the mass market with high speed film capabilities with enormous possibilities. In late twentieth century photography took shape as contemporary photography with Cindy Sherman, Jeff wall and Andreas Gurksky taking the lead as they research, develop their own style, make statements, slowly evolving into artists. The author opines that in digital age photography is everywhere which has lost its solidness in other terms ‘liquid photography’ or ‘post photography’ by Joan Fontcuberta. The author concludes saying to make photography meaningful, one has to study and read a lot, get the ideas, write a statement, look at the society, the decisions of one’s life which all have the potential to rev up. The article helped me to realize where I’m stuck, develop awareness towards my feelings and emotions, If I’m doing a project on photography this time I would certainly think on rendering a meaningful and provocative art that draws audience attention, find my own style and stand out from the rest.

It always surprising to me why I feel concerned towards the planet. My heart melts every time I read the news about events that destroys the planet such as deforestation, climate change, melting polar ice, habitat loss for wild life, extinction of species, air pollution, marine pollution. I believe its innate to me. The one thing that always haunts me is the plastic, we are technologically so advanced in various disciplines, but the world still doesn’t know what to do with the single use plastic, it’s not been recycled enough to protect the environment. Though many organizations are pushing towards biodegradable bags, compostable bags nobody knows the fate of these until the research conducted by a marine biologist Richard Thompson and his graduate students at Plymouth University, they buried a handful of bags named as biodegradable or compostable for three years in their school garden, exposed to outside air and submerged in the water. What they found was quiet shocking the bags were very intact and was able to carry 5 pounds of groceries. “It did surprise me that after three years you can still carry shopping home in them,” (Parker, 2019). Thompson told National Geographic in an interview. Because biodegradables and compostable materials require different processes to degrade. It causes excruciating pain for the recycling companies to recycle when all these are mixed together.1 This was quiet intriguing for me as I want to extend my career into product design, this poses a serious question, why can’t I work on the process of recycling the plastic into various products? Though there were ongoing research’s in other parts of the world, where a team of researchers in 2011 tweaked a type of vitrimer, a glass like plastic by altering the chemical bonds into new dynamic covalent diketoenamine bonds that holds the plastic, these require less energy to breakdown, for example, a solution of water at room temperature makes it to extract high quality plastic that can be recycled.2 The other group of researchers from Purdue University are trying to convert the plastic waste into usable fuel source such as gasoline or diesel by heating supercritical water between 716 and 932 degrees Fahrenheit, with pressures exceeding more than 2,300 times at sea level when the polypropylene which makes the quarter of the five billion tons of plastic waste is added to the solution is converted to oil in less than an hour.3 These kind of research provoke me into thinking in that area on how to make use of this plastic waste into designing usable products that can be recycled over again creating less impact on the environment. I see my role as a future product designer not to make my products environment friendly, but resides in the reuse of the materials that is already causing potential problems to the environment and make them profitable.
