Falters Falter (Images that failed to convey the original meaning)
Process of making
The images below shows some of the process of making which includes addition of few things or removal of the other to get to through the final outcome.
Initial thumbnail rough sketches of the ideas
Rough sketches –––– Initial attempts ––––– Modifications
The images below the show the extension of one idea to the other delivering the desired outcome with the similar technique but using different materials.
Similar drawings but different pattern
Use of pastel on the first and paint on the later
Using pieces of wood in different forms
Using yarn in different ways leading to the outcome
Using cloth as material in ways through to outcome
shredding the paper in ways to get desired outcome
Using Aerocolor and rubber band to get similar effect
Using pastel and collage for the same idea
using stones, foam and rubber band to create voids for a similar outcome
Works touching the edge of support with form in one place or the centre
Works touching the edge of support with 2 forms in place
Works touching the edge with forms at three or more places
Positive and Negative space
Works occupying 80% of space on the surface
Works occupying 50% of space on the surface
Works occupying 20% of space on the surface
works taking less than 20% space to convey the meaning
To produce the drawings that brings a 2D tactile feel and texture to the forms, various materials were used in the process which includes
- Pigment liners
- Pieces of wood
- Cotton cloth
- Melted Wax
- Woolen thread
- Collaged paper
- Staple pins
- Linen paper
- Rubber band
The drawings exhibited a diverse tonal range with natural tones obtained through the materials used on the white or black background.
Figure and Field
As the drawings didn’t use paint as the main medium, there is not much scope for me to play around that field, but some of the drawings were done using a masking tape and layered the forms in many ways using the materials I used, creating voids or adding things over the other, shredding the paper, collaging etc.below are some of the examples.
The moment of ‘thought liberation’
This is a moment, where until that point I couldn’t figure out how to convey the original meaning of Falter or I mistaken the word falter for falling down/ falling apart. When one of the tutors on 06/03/2019 explained ‘What is’ rather than ‘What should be’ I got an insight into, where I completed most of my work.

Some of the work researched similar to the work that I did on Pinterest and grouped under one section here
My research can also be witnessed at various levels in the process of making.
What could possibly be improved, if given another chance to do the same work?
- For this part of the brief i generated many ideas and materials but didn’t make many forms with one single idea, the next time i would work with one single idea (material in this case) in many different forms. For example i would only use the elastic band to make 30 2D drawings in different forms (this can be witnessed in 3D tactile work (where all the forms are made of lines but gave rise to various structures) & in 2D digital work (where most of the work is in various forms giving rise to a circular structure)).
- Get a complete understanding of the verb before I start my work.
